James will offer kind, specific and constructive feedback on 3 songs from songwriters who register for this course and choose to submit. He’ll offer ways that anyone can use these principles to improve their songwriting. He will also take questions from participants on the process and the industry.

Your instructor
James Cornelison is a musician and singer-songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. His musical path has included growing up in an opera singing household, a tenure in Chicago’s blues clubs, a jazz and contemplative studies degree from Michigan, moving to LA, James engaged session work for film scores, producing, mixing, teaching, multi-instrumenticizing, endlessly songwriting for himself and with others, run-on sentences, and many tours around the world accompanying artists including Theo Katzman, Joey Dosik, Jon Batiste, and since 2021 Lake Street Dive. When the call to provide a bio arises, he can only ever bring himself to write a new one.

How do I submit a song and how will the three songs be chosen?
After registering you’ll receive details on how to submit a song. Songs will be chosen based on a combination of merit and educational value to the workshop. Not everyone’s song will be chosen, and thus not everyone will have the chance to receive direct feedback, but the principles covered by James will be applicable to anyone’s songwriting journey.
Do i have to submit a song for feedback to attend the workshop?
No! You’re welcome to be a happy little fly on the wall. James will touch upon general principles of songwriting for the benefit of all. You can learn vicariously through others’ songs without submitting a song yourself.
