enlightenment and songwriting?

Um…dang, I thought you were going to answer that, but then I remembered that this is a blog and not an actual dialogue. So I guess I just set myself up to answer it.
I’d say one way to describe enlightenment is that it’s the act or state of being awake to one’s own life as one is living it. Another way would be to say it’s sensing one’s own true nature. And yet another way would include subjugating the ego, invoking a spirit of true service to others, and connecting to a higher wisdom.
Joan Sutherland, in an article for Lion’s Roar, says, “At the very heart of Buddhism is the promise of enlightenment.” She continues, “In Buddhist terms, the way things really are is enlightenment, and our experience of the way things really are is also (the same) enlightenment. It is the vast and awe-inspiring nature of the universe itself, and it is the way each of us thinks, feels, and acts when we’re aware of and participating in that vast enlightenment manifesting as us.”
Wait, what, me again? Right, I guess I’m still holding the pen.
Songwriting is grabbing a seat at the edge of the void, listening deeply to whatever you can hear, and documenting it. Another way to say it is that you take a lifetime of musical experience and a lifetime of lifetime experience and let it come through you in music as honestly as you can. You tell it like it really is. And yet another way would include subjugating the ego, invoking a spirit of true service to others, and connecting to a higher wisdom.
So, my last question is:
I’m pretty sure you got this one all on your own
YOU are vast and awe-inspiring,
Gary
